WESTLAKE, Ohio– It is a new beginning for American Greetings, the greeting card company that started in Cleveland 109 years ago.

Company executives broke ground Wednesday on a new world headquarters building in the Crocker Park center in Westlake.

The new, five-story building is scheduled to be open in the summer of 2016.

American Greetings employs about 2,000 people who will move from the company’s current headquarters in Brooklyn.

Westlake Mayor Dennis Clough spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony. “Not only is this a milestone in the corporate history of American Greetings, but it will become part of Westlake’s history as well,” he said.

Clough and City Council President Michael Killeen presented American Greetings with an oversized greeting card welcoming the company to Westlake.

The American Greetings building will be part of a new phase of development that will bring stores, restaurants, apartments and a hotel to Crocker Park.
