AKRON, Ohio-During a news conference Friday morning, new Akron Mayor Garry Moneypenny admitted to inappropriately touching a city employee.
He also announced he will not seek election in November, allowing other possible candidates to collect signatures in order to appear on the ballot.
“I’ve made a mistake and I take full ownership for that,” the new mayor said.
According to Moneypenny, the incident happened in his council chambers during the week of May 24. The woman was wishing him luck as he transitioned from city council president to mayor.
“In the emotion of the moment, I turned a good-bye hug into a too-personal encounter. I have known this employee for over 14 years. We have always had a very professional relationship. And I clearly violated a professional and personal boundary,” he said.
Moneypenny apologized to the victim, his wife of 25 years and the members of his cabinet.
“I spent 37 years in law enforcement. I’ve spent years in service to victim’s assistance. I regret violating the very same principles I’ve spent my career upholding,” he said.
