CLEVELAND – The local chapter of the NAACP is asking city and county leaders to share details of security planning for this summer’s GOP Convention, saying it is concerned about what may happen.

Recalling protests that followed controversial police shootings, the NAACP writes in a letter that the protests “surrounding the Tamir Rice and Michael Brelo matters were just child’s play compared to what many think will occur in our city in July.”

The letter is addressed to Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and County Executive Armond Budish. It makes a thinly veiled reference to Trump when it says “no one with the profile of a candidate for the nation’s highest office has ever supported violence to get their point across.”

Trump, of course, said he was concerned that their could be “riots” if he has the most delegates coming into the convention, but not a majority, and the party picks someone else as the nominee.

Conversely, there are concerns that people opposed to Trump’s controversial views, especially on immigration, may come to Cleveland to protest if Trump is the nominee.

The NAACP’s letter says protests are a “hallmark of democracy,” but worries about Ohio being a so-called “open carry” state regarding firearms.

“Our concern is whether our police and sheriff’s department are prepared to confront people who…will have no hesitation…about openly brandishing…assault rifles,…”

The letter asks local leaders to share as many details as possible “to the extent that it does not compromise the integrity of their security plans,…”

The Secret Service is in charge of security at the convention itself.
