STARK COUNTY, Ohio — A mystery illness impacting area dogs led to the cancellation of a popular annual event.

The Stark County Humane Society announced Thursday that it will not hold the Mutt Strut this year.

It was supposed to take place on Sept. 29.

In a press release, the humane society said:

“In view of the ongoing efforts by Stark County and the State of Ohio Health and Veterinary officials to determine whether the recent reported illnesses of several dogs in Canal Fulton can be attributed to a medical condition capable of being spread to the surrounding canine population in Stark County, the Board of Directors of the Stark County Humane Society has determined that the Mutt Strut scheduled for September 29, 2013 should be canceled.

The SCHS Board of Directors continues to be fully supportive of all efforts to ensure the health and welfare of our canine population and is confident the ongoing investigation will eventually ascertain whether and to what extent a serious medical problem potentially impacting upon the entire canine population exists.”

Arrangements will be made to either refund sponsors or use their contributions for future events.

Meantime, the Ohio Department of Agriculture is testing samples taken from sick dogs treated at a Stark County animal clinic.

Several may be infected with the undiagnosed disease and at least one is believed to have died from it.
