CLEVELAND – For the first time since a 10-year-old was shot, while sitting in a car next to his father, family members speak out, wanting to thank the community for their support and prayers.
Lakia Johnson and her friends tell Fox 8 they are also extremely grateful for those who helped her son, Donta Padgett Jr., moments after he was shot, and his father, Donta Padgett Sr. was killed.
Her son was shot in the shoulder.
Two Cleveland police officers administered first aid at the scene, before he was rushed to the hospital.
“I just want to hug them, kiss them,” Johnson said, as tears streamed down her face.
She said her son is continuing to recover from his injuries, but is grieving the loss of his father.
“He is heartbroken, I am heartbroken,” Johnson said. Saying, even though she and Donta’s father were no longer living together they remained good friends.
“He was bringing him home from his football game. He was a good dad. They were so close.”
Her friends, agree, and say they are troubled by a video taken by onlookers shortly after the shooting that shows her son on the ground injured.
“I can’t look at it, and I don’t want to look at it,” Johnson said.
Her friends are pleading for those who have the video on their social media pages to take it down.
“Please, please, it would help if you have it up to get the videos down and if you see it up, please report it,” said Synisha Miller.
The family has also started a GoFundMe page, for Donta Padgett Jr. to help with medical and other expenses.
“This is so hard for him, and he is such a good person. He does well in school and sports . And he just loved his father,” Johnson said.
