A woman who has helped hundreds of women deliver their babies recently chose to sacrifice her sight for her own child.
According to Global News, midwife Chantal Gauthier-Valliancourt was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 — it started in her right eye and had the potential to move to other parts of her body.
But after treatment, doctors said she was in remission.
She got pregnant, and then learned the eye tumor was back.
She decided against abortion, radiation and surgery in an effort to save her baby and opted for natural treatment.
But at 28 weeks pregnant, she learned there was a 70 percent chance of passing the cancer on to her baby through the placenta.
So Gauthier-Valliancourt had her right eye removed last week.
Her baby is healthy and is due at the end of August.
