CLEVELAND— A Cleveland woman jumped out of a second story window after being lit on fire by her boyfriend, and tossing her baby out the window into the arms of a passing stranger, police said.

Police said the woman, identified by family members as Tiffany Lawson, 31, was holding her 18-month-old son and in an argument with her boyfriend, 31-year-old Kevin Ford, III just before 11 a.m. Tuesday inside an apartment on Quincy Avenue.

“As she was going up the stairs carrying the child, the male threw lighter fluid on her,” said Angel Morales with the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority Police Department.

“From what I was told was they were arguing over the rent. He wanted the rent money and she wouldn’t give it to him so he got some lighter fluid and poured the lighter fluid on her and lit her on fire,” said Matt Macon, who has a daughter with Lawson.

Macon said luckily a woman was waiting nearby at a bus stop and heard Lawson screaming.

“She has the baby hanging out the window. She throws the baby and miraculously this woman is there to catch the child,” Macon said, adding the woman happened to be waiting at a nearby bus stop when it happened.

Then Ford lit Lawson on fire and she also jumped form the second story window, police said.

A woman, who identified herself only as Lawson’s cousin, was clearly upset as Fox 8 News spoke to her outside the apartment.

“She’s just, she’s doing fine and she’s good and she’s healthy and she’s good. The baby is fine,” the woman said.

Family members said Lawson suffered burns to her back, neck and has a broken arm from the fall.

The baby was not hurt.

Ford was caught by police about five hours later after a massive manhunt.

“I just pray that God has mercy on his soul because right now. I don’t,” Macon said, adding Lawson is not the type of person to become violent during arguments.

Macon said Lawson’s four other children, including his daughter, were at school and did not witness the terrifying scene.

“I mean, how do you tell your daughter the man [her mother] was with lit her on fire and she had to jump out the window?” Macon said.
