MENTOR, Ohio-- Family and friends of fallen Mentor Police Officer Mathew Mazany gathered to honor him on Monday.
Mazany, 41, was assisting with a traffic stop on state Route 2 in Mentor on June 24, 2018 when he was hit by a driver who fled the scene. He was a 14-year veteran of the Mentor Police Department and left behind a son.
The somber memorial at the Mentor High School Fine Arts Center was marked with prayer, song and the sound of bagpipes.
An officer read a letter written by Mazany's brother Mike. Mike Mazany was unable to attend because he was fulfilling his brother's finding wish: To have his ashes scattered in the coastal California town on Gualala.
"My biggest fear in all of this is that Mathew James would be forgotten. I would like to thank everyone for seeing to it that Mathew lives on," Mike Mazany wrote.
The driver of the Jeep, 25-year-old Brian Anthony, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle homicide, and was sentenced to 11 and a half years in prison.
