CLEVELAND, Ohio — Sunday was an off-day for the Cleveland Browns ahead of Monday’s preseason game against the Washington Redskins.
All eyes continue to be on the men “under center.”
Rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer have been locked in a competition to be Cleveland’s starter for weeks, and the second preseason game against the Redskins could determine which of them starts the season opener at Pittsburgh on Sept. 7.
Manziel said Saturday that he’s “not ready for Pittsburgh right now” but only because he lacks experience.
Coach Mike Pettine plans to meet with his staff and pick a starter Tuesday.
Although Manziel appears to be line to be Cleveland’s starter at some point in the future, Hoyer says he hasn’t concerned himself with trade speculation and is “looking forward to being the starting quarterback.”
