BEREA, Ohio — Friday was the eve of Browns training camp, but it felt like Christmas Eve in Northeast Ohio.

The Browns were ready for camp to kick off Saturday morning, and so was Johnny Manziel, who addressed his summer of partying.

“At the end of the day, I’ve made some rookie mistakes,” Manziel said. “There’s some things that I wish I could’ve gone back and done a little differently, but I’m continuing to move forward and trying to represent this organization in a positive manner and a positive light.”

Manziel acknowledged he spoke with head coach Mike Pettine and General Manager Ray Farmer about the recent photo of him holding a rolled up $20 bill.

“For me, my main thing is, people within this building, my teammates, the coaching staff, the higher-ups in this organization we’ve all been on the same page. We’ve all been good and very eager to be moving forward,” said Manziel.

It is clear, the quarterback competition is Brian Hoyer’s to lose. Hoyer will start with the number ones, Johnny Manziel will take snaps with the two’s, and barring any injury, it will be Brian Hoyer getting the start August 9 in Detroit.

“Obviously the competition will bring out the best player in me, but I also think the thing that drives me the most is my goal of being the starting quarterback for this team,” Hoyer said.

Whether it’s Manziel or Hoyer who walks away the starting quarterback for this team, one thing you can count on: everybody involved in the competition came ready to compete.

“I was very pleased that we were able to get these two extra days, just kind of a head start camp for these guys, just to get in the meetings, get in the huddle and call the plays and get in and get out,” said head coach Mike Pettine. “It was clear to see all of them, especially Johnny had worked ahead.”

The first training camp practice is sold out.

Practice begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Berea.
