OBERLIN, Ohio- A man in a motorized wheelchair was the victim of a hit-and-run crash in Oberlin on Thursday.
An 85-year-old man turned himself in to the Oberlin Police Department and is believed to be the driver, according to police.
He gave his statement, but police are continuing to investigate and no charges have been filed as this time.
The accident happened on East Lorain Street near Berger Court just before 7 p.m.
Oberlin police said 53-year-old Eric Gonzales was in his wheelchair when he was hit by a gold Toyota Prius. The victim was thrown 10 to 15 feet and his wheelchair, which had reflectors on it, was severely damaged.
“All I remember is waking up in the snow,” Gonzales said Friday, as he wiped away tears. “I could have been dead.”
Gonzales was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he was treated and released. He suffered two broken ribs and bruises to his leg.
“I need that wheelchair,” Gonzales said. “I lost my one leg and that is my only means of transportation.”
