MENTOR, Ohio — A man charged in the death of a 1-year-old boy in Mentor was issued $1 million bond in court Monday.

Anthony Francisco Garcea, 23, faces a charge of murder in the death of 1-year-old Khalil Abbasi. Garcea cried while talking to the judge in court.

The child’s mother was in the courtroom for Garcea’s arraignment Monday, holding her baby’s blanket and a stuffed animal. Dozens of family members and friends were in court.

According to a release from Mentor police, authorities were called at around 6 p.m. Thursday to Park House Apartments for a report of an unresponsive 1-year-old.

Khalil was treated at the scene for head trauma and taken to the hospital for surgery to relieve swelling on the brain. He died during surgery.

Garcea was caring for the child at the time. Garcea is the boyfriend of the child’s mother. He had been living with the two for the past couple of months.

Garcea initially told police that the child had fallen and hit his head. But preliminary results from the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office states the injuries sustained by the child were inconsistent with the type of fall Garcea described.

The investigation revealed that Garcea reportedly forcibly struck the child causing the child to strike his head, which caused the fatal injuries.

He later admitted to striking the child. It’s not clear what led up to that point.
