WOOSTER, Ohio — A Wooster man is charged with arson after a massive house fire over the weekend.

John Howland, 22, was arrested and charged, according to Wooster Fire officials.

Just before 4 a.m. on June 8, firefighters were dispatched to Nold Avenue. Two police officers were first on the scene and were told the occupants were still inside the burning home.

The officers entered the window, where heavy black smoke was pouring out, and guided a man to the exit.

Firefighters rescued three other occupants, one who had burns to 30 percent of her body. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

One other occupant and a police officer were also taken to the hospital. A second officer was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation and reported to the hospital at the end of his shift for further evaluation.

Officials later determined the fire appeared to be arson.

The fire loss is estimated at $60,000.
