PARMA – A man was taken into custody by Parma police on Thursday suspected of ethnic intimidation.

According to officers, the man showed up at the Islamic Center of Cleveland on West 130th Street and claimed he wanted to join the mosque but then began calling members “pedophiles,” and “terrorists.”

Witnesses told police the man then grabbed an axe from his vehicle.

Police were already nearby directing traffic at the mosque because of the religious holiday.

The man reportedly fled in his car but was captured by Parma officers a short time later.

He is being held on felony ethnic intimidation but has not yet been charged.

Parma police spokesman Lt. Kevin Riley says detectives will be meeting with prosecutors Friday to review the case and determine what charges are appropriate.

No one was injured during the incident.

The suspect is expected in court at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
