SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — A 76-year-old man is home from the hospital after he was bitten by a rattlesnake while protecting a little girl.
Nick Karnazes was leading a field trip for a group of 4th graders in Irvine Regional Park when a rattlesnake began to posture near a 9-year-old girl.
Karnazes got between the young rattler the girl. He was bitten twice on the hand.
Amazingly, Karnazes did not initially call 911.
He continued the hike, but then started to feel fatigue after about 20 minutes.
“I started getting a tingling sensation, so I knew I better go to a hospital and get this taken care of,” Karnazes said.
He spent three nights at Western Regional Medical Center in Santa Ana.
Karnazes now says he shouldn’t have waited and advises people who do get a rattlesnake bite to seek medical attention immediately.
