WARREN TWP., Ohio (WKBN) — Across the Valley, a “loud boom” on Saturday afternoon had hundreds wondering what had happened.
A boiler tank explosion at 2:50 p.m. Saturday at the Cleveland-Cliffs ArcelorMittal plant on Main Avenue had crews from Lordstown and Warren Township fire departments on standby for three hours.
Warren Township fire Chief Joe Natali said those with Cleveland-Cliffs “took care of everything.”
“A boiler just went, so they turned on another one and diverted everything,” Natali said. “There was no chemical release, no injuries reported at all, and any water that was coming down the driveway was all clean water.”
People from Austintown, Warren, Niles, Boardman and as far away as Western Pennsylvania reported what sounded like an explosion that shook their homes.

Mitchell Wilson lives in Austintown and said it sounded like it happened just outside his house.
“I just heard this loud boom,” Wilson said. “It honestly sounded like there was a car accident outside and there was nothing there, so we were confused.”
When Wilson found out the explosion happened in Warren, he was shocked. He said hearing the “boom” was alarming.
“To hear it all the way over here — I mean, that’s at least 10, 12 miles away from where we live,” Wilson said. “It’s all kind of crazy, There’s a bunch of crazy stuff going on now — with East Palestine, the arson in Warren a couple months ago — and now this.”
While the second boiler is up and running, it’s reported that Cleveland-Cliffs will work on repairing the exploded boiler.
