LORAIN, Ohio-- A historic landmark in Lorain has been the target of theft and vandalism.

The Lorain Lighthouse, which can be seen from the shore of Lake Erie, had several items taken during the early morning hours of July 4.

Witnesses said neighbors in the 1300 block of W. 2nd St. saw at least four suspects take a blue and white paddleboat out to the lighthouse. They then came back to shore on foot, according to officials.

It was later reported that the paddleboat had been stolen from a person who lives on W. 2nd St.
Lorain Police told Fox 8 that several items were stolen from the 1917 structure, including a telescope and yard tools.

"I am very disappointed this happened," said Alan Pollock, who is the co-chair of the Port of Lorain Foundation, Inc.

Pollock explained the Lorain Lighthouse has been in the restoration process for years.  It is currently 80% finished.

People who live on W. 2nd St. were upset about the news that the Lorain Lighthouse had been targeted for crime.

"I was horrified because I know all of the hard labor that went into it, collecting the money to restore it,” said Barbara Deidrick, who used to work as a tour guide at the lighthouse.

Pollock estimates the loss from the crime at about $2,000.

Lorain Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to call the Lorain police detectives at 440-204-2105.
