Local teen fencer qualifies for Rio Paralympics

PARMA – Lauryn DeLuca of Parma is headed to Rio this summer!

DeLuca, 16, is a competitor in wheelchair fencing and secured her her spot at the 2016 Paralympic Games by taking home the gold medal this week at the Pan American Wheelchair Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

She is already a 3-time national champion in women’s wheelchair fencing.

She is the only U.S. wheelchair fencer to qualify for the 2016 Paralympics.

DeLuca began her fencing career will traditional fencing, while she dealt with the challenges of her cerebral palsy. She was then recruited by the US national wheelchair coach.
