SHAKER HEIGHTS – Police in Shaker Heights continue to investigate a fatal hit-and-run accident, as a city mourns the loss of a beloved member of the community.

Police said James Caffrey, 51, was jogging on South Park Boulevard in Shaker Heights when he was struck by a car late Saturday afternoon. The driver kept going.

University Heights police confirm the driver of that car was initially stopped for a traffic violation in their city, but, left when the officer approached the car.

The driver then is accused of hitting Caffrey. Police later found the suspect's car abandoned. It appeared the driver fled on foot into some nearby woods.

Caffrey was a fifth grade teacher at Woodbury Elementary in Shaker Heights.   He was also an active member of St. Dominic’s Church and part of the Project Serve Ministry that took mission trips to El Salvador.   A priest at St. Dominic’s said Caffrey was a father of two and recently celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary.

Anyone with information about this hit-and-run accident is asked to call Shaker Heights police.
