Cleveland, OH – While neither of Wednesday’s Supreme Court decisions directly benefit same-sex couples here in Ohio, many advocates said it’s still a big win.

“I can’t marry in Ohio and I’ve been in a committed relationship for more than 30 years,” said Thomas Hawn.

Hawn said the rulings represent progress, the same kind of progress he hopes to see for Ohio.

“This not only gives us momentum to deal with employment discrimination and public accommodations, but also the power to say 'let`s talk about the issue' and 'how can we get marriage equality in Ohio,'” he said.

Hawn attended a rally in downtown Cleveland to celebrate. Many people there could be seen holding up signs and cheering, all of them happy about the historical changes in store for our country.

“We've been together almost ten years now, so it's awesome. It'd be nice to have some legal rights and things like that, but to us, we're together and nothing can change that,” said Scott Swaggerty.

Swaggerty went to the rally with his partner of ten years.

Right now, 12 states allow same-sex marriage and advocates hope Ohio is next in line.

“I have a lot of faith in Ohio, there has been more headway in Ohio than I think in many other states around the country,” said Todd Saporito.

While the decisions are a victory for some, critics aren’t too thrilled. They believe marriage should remain between a man and a woman.

“With this decision, the courts have allowed the desires of adults to trump the needs of children. Every child deserves a mommy and a daddy and with this decision, that undercuts the needs of our children,” said Republican Representative Tim Huelskamp of Kansas.

Critics also argue it's going to cause a tax nightmare for states who do not allow same-sex marriage.
