WESTLAKE, Ohio -- Security has been beefed up at movie theaters across the country and in Northeast Ohio following Friday morning’s massacre at a theater in Aurora, Colorado.

Some measures are visible while others are not being discussed for obvious safety reasons.

“We want to reassure everybody that it's still safe to go to the movies,” said Westlake Police Cpt. Guy Turner. "Just keep your eyes open."

Turner was working at the Regal Crocker Park cinema Friday during a similar early morning showing of the much-anticipated Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

He says that’s when he learned that a dozen of people were killed, and dozens more injured while watching the same movie.

Police say 24-year-old James Holmes was the shooter, who unleashed an arsenal of weaponry on the crowd.

''Of course you get a sick feeling in your stomach. You're praying it's not an act of terrorism which it apparently is not,” said Turner.

Extra security was already planned for the movie because the cinemas were expecting large crowds, but now they have reinforced their efforts to prevent any copycats.

Police are asking everyone to be extra vigilant, as well.

They say if you see something out of the ordinary, you should report it right away.

“It's a very scary thing,” said Colleen Weber.

Theaters are also cracking down on costumes .

AMC has banned all face covering masks and fake weapons, while Regal Cinemas is exercising stricter controls, and any pranksters won't be tolerated.

Both law enforcement and the theater's management want to create the safest environment possible so people can enjoy the movie during this difficult time.

But some things will just take time.

Some moviegoers say they just couldn’t help feeling odd watching the film.

“The movie's fantastic, but it's still hanging on you as you watch,” said Akil Dukes.
