Local Boxing Hall of Famer Passes Away at 92

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — Former heavyweight boxer Jimmy Bivins passed away early Wednesday morning, according to family members.

Jimmy Bivins, born James Louis Bivins December 6, 1919, suffered from several medical issues later in life and eventually lost his battle with pneumonia.

He was 92.

Bivins, a native of Dry Branch, Georgia, spent his entire professional boxing career in Cleveland, Ohio. He made his heavyweight debut on January 15, 1940, winning by knockout. He went on to win 86 matches, 31 by knockout, 19 of which he won in row in 1940.

Bivins never won a championship title despite defeating eight of 11 world champions, however he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1999.
