CLEVELAND, Ohio – People took a plunge at Edgewater Beach Saturday to participate in a very special event — the Special Olympics of Northeast Ohio’s Annual Polar Plunge.

FOX 8 participates every year. Gabe Spiegel, Peggy and Ed Gallek, and a host of people from our station headed into the frigid water, all to support Special Olympics.

Lou Maglio emceed the event, which has become known for some pretty spectacular costumes.

Many people ran in and ran out of a 34° F Lake Erie, but a few brave souls actually plunged into the water.

The goal was to raise $80,000 for Special Olympics athletes. According to Gabe Spiegel, organizers are still waiting on final numbers, but “[he] knows we soared past $80K raised today.” $73,000 was raised last year.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was also a captain this year.
