CLEVELAND -- Bond was set at $5 million for the man charged with aggravated murder in the 1984 death of Gloria Pointer.

Hernandez Warren, 58, was arraigned Thursday morning.

The prosecution described a "vicious attack" on the 14-year-old back in 1984.

Pointer was on her way to Harry E. Davis Junior High on Cleveland’s east side but never made it.

Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Brian Murphy told the court the search to identify Pointer's killer has extended more than 28 years.

"During that time the victim’s family has made an effort so law enforcement didn’t forget about their daughter.  The girl was also a sister and a friend," Murphy said.

He then told the judge evidence and Warren's confession links him to the crime.

Defense attorney Nicole Longino argued Warren has not been in trouble in 12 years and described him as a family man.

"If there has been any type of confession in this case, your honor, it was as obtained during the time I was trying to talk to (Warren) and was being denied access to him.  The first two days he was arrested I was not allowed to see him or talk to him at the time he was being interrogated,” Longino said.

The Gloria Pointer case came back to life recently when Plain Dealer reporter Rachel Dissell inquired about the status of the investigation and suggested re-testing any evidence.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Crime Lab got permission to enter a DNA profile from the case into the CODIS system.

It resulted in a hit on April 26.

Warren was arrested Tuesday.

Additional charges could be filed once the case is presented to the grand jury.
