SHEFFIELD LAKE, Ohio —  A local artist’s talent for creating life-like baby dolls nearly landed her in trouble with the law.

Kathy Cadle recently began painting and creating the realistic looking dolls with her sister Rachel Smith and her business Bunny Bundles Reborns.

But when the grandmother tried to post pictures of her latest creation named Ethan, something went terribly wrong.

“Come around the corner and the cop’s looking at me, and I go, ‘what’s happened?'” said Kathy. “He goes, ‘I got a report that you were selling a baby,’ and I was like, ‘are you kidding me?'”

Kathy immediately presented Ethan to the officer who immediately relaxed and chuckled.

“And he let me take his picture because I said, ‘nobody’s going to believe this,’” said Kathy.

The dolls are called reborns and are part of a growing trend in premiere doll-making.

They come in a kit made from a mold, and can take days, weeks or longer to paint and piece together.

Kathy said her sister’s art background allows them to create some of the most realistic-looking dolls currently being sold.

Costs range from $200 to $500 or more, depending on the detail.

Recently, a Hollywood studio purchased one to appear in a new production, but Kathy and Rachel are most proud of the dolls’ other use.

She says, nursing homes have begun using them as a therapy tool for Alzheimer’s patients.

“They talk to them and it kind of brings them back to when they had children,” said Kathy.

However, Kathy says from now on, they’ll be a lot more careful where and how they post ads for the dolls online.
