AKRON, Ohio — LeBron James is teaming up with a celebrity television home makeover host to renovate a home in Akron.

The announcement was made on Facebook by Nicole Curtis, host of the HGTV program called ‘Rehab Addict.’

Curtis posted the message:

Michele Campbell, the executive director of the LeBron James Family Foundation, confirmed on Thursday that the project will benefit 10 local families, all of whom have been identified through LeBron’s ‘Wheels for Education’ program.’

Nine of the families will get yard makeovers starting August 1. Curtis will shoot an episode of her show as they work to renovate the home of an Akron Middle School student and her family.

“There’s three children, a single mom that lives in the home, the youngest daughter is our Wheels for Education student who is going into the sixth grade, and she’s part of our class of 2021, and she has two brothers and the home is in some need of attention. The mom puts all of her time and energy into raising her three kids so we are coming in to help her out and help make her life a little easier,” said Campbell.

The foundation’s executive director said LeBron works as hard off the court at trying to think of ways to help people in his hometown as he does playing basketball.

“I think LeBron is very proud of his hometown, and he always talks about being from here no matter where he works hes always given back to his hometown and never forgotten where he’s come from,” said Campbell.

The Akron Habitat for Humanity has reached out to Curtis offering whatever help they can to do the rehab.

“If you follow her show or what she does she is kind of all over the Midwest, and so to have her come here to Akron to do a project, would really highlight the opportunity of homes that can be saved,” said Rochelle Fisher.

Fisher said no one knows better than her volunteers about the housing needs in Akron and believes bringing the celebrity status of Curtis, along with that of LeBron James, can only help bring attention to the need.

“My son looks up to him, you know, it’s an opportunity to see a guy do good, giving back to the community,” said Fisher.

The LeBron James Family Foundation is not yet identifying the homes that will get the makeovers to prevent the families from being overwhelmed.

The family whose home is being rehabilitated will be moved out while the work is being done.

Campbell says they expect to begin on August 1 with the yard renovations, and all of the work is expected to be completed by August 10.

“LeBron is about helping the community, using a lot of local businesses, it just seemed like a match.” said Campbell, explaining that she believe Curtis’ has the same commitment to her home town of Detroit, “a lot of the same values so we are going to renovate this home.”
