KIRKERSVILLE, Ohio– The Kirkersville Police Chief was among those killed in a shooting at a nursing home Friday morning.

The shooting was reported at the Pine Kirk Care Center in Licking County at about 7:30 a.m.

Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said Chief Steven Eric Disario, 36, died of his injuries. The father of six had only been police chief for three weeks. The family has another baby on the way.

Thorp said two Pine Kirk employees were found dead inside the facility. The suspect gunman is also dead after turning his weapon on himself. There is no current threat to the public, Thorp said.

“This was a very unfortunate, tragic incident,” Thorp said.

Pine Kirk owner Tom Rosser, who was en route to a staff meeting when he heard the news, said the 24 residents were not harmed. He said he believes his staff did everything they could to protect those at the center.

Rosser called the staff, “dedicated, caring and courageous.”

The residents are being moved to other area nursing homes on a temporary basis.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is aiding local authorities in assessing the crime scene. Investigators do not know the relationship between the shooter and the victims.
