COLUMBUS, Ohio — “Joe the Plumber” has lost his bid for a U.S. House seat in Ohio’s 9th District, Fox News projects.

Democrat incumbent Marcy Kaptur beat the Republican, whose formal name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher.

This was Wurzelbacher’s first shot at public office.

He was first thrust into the spotlight during the 2008 presidential campaign, when he questioned then-candidate Barack Obama about his small business tax policies. That, followed by several shout-outs from U.S. Senator John McCain during the presidential debate.

Wurzelbacher was celebrated among Republicans, who encouraged his running for Congress.

In the end, he lost out to the longest-serving Democratic woman in the House, Kaptur, who handily defeated fellow Democrat Dennis Kucinich in a primary earlier this year.
