Jimmy Kimmel got choked up during a monologue about Cecil the lion, an animal that was allegedly killed in Zimbabwe by an American dentist.

Cecil was one of Africa’s best known and loved big cats. Walter Palmer, a dentist from Minnesota, says he thought everything was above board with the lion hunt he paid to go on earlier this month.

Tuesday night, Kimmel brought up the story and expressed disgust at what Palmer reportedly had done.

“The big question, is why are you shooting a lion in the first place? How is that fun?” he asked.

During his monologue, Kimmel got choked up while providing information to the audience about how to support Oxford University, which was tracking Cecil as part of its research, and to make the situation “into a positive.”

“Maybe we can show the world that not all Americans are like this … fool,” he said.

The 13-year-old black mane lion suffered a slow and painful death, according to the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.

The hunters lured him out of the park, the conservation group said, and Palmer then shot the lion with a bow and arrow, a method he is known for. But the arrow wasn’t enough to kill Cecil, who survived for another 40 hours until the hunters tracked him down and shot him with a gun.

The big cat was then skinned and beheaded, and the hunters tried to destroy the GPS collar that Cecil was wearing as part of Oxford’s research.

“I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt,” Palmer said in a statement issued Tuesday. “I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt.”

His role in Cecil’s demise has brought a huge wave of online anger crashing down on him.

Two Zimbabweans were arrested over the killing of the lion.
