MASSILLON --Neighbors say they were ambushed. Two people were killed in Massillon over the weekend, and according to police, they were victims of a domestic violence attack.
Mike Lovette, 33, died after he was shot Saturday night, according to the Stark County Coroner's office. The young woman, who has not been identified pending an autopsy, was also shot and killed.
Massillon police say Lovette and the woman were shot in a vehicle outside of Lovette's home in the 900 block of 17th Street NE.
Authorities say an ex-boyfriend is the suspect.
"It was almost like an ambush attack, like he was waiting for him, you know what I mean? And left him no chance to talk or survive or anything," said Nino Melini, a next door neighbor.
"It's just crazy that something would happen like that over an act of jealousy is disgusting."
Melini's wife tried to help the pair who was shot. He also said the two had only been dating for a short time.
Meanwhile, people who live down the street were also concerned.
"I was inside and I heard gunshots, I heard pop, pop, pop" Andrea Gretch said.
Gretch tells Fox 8 she didn't realize at first there was a shooting. She also didn't know the suspect had taken off after the violence.
"I didn't hear a scuffle, I didn't hear screams, I didn't hear anything like that."
Massillon police caught up with the suspect at his Jackson Township home Saturday night. They say he had attempted to take his own life, but was taken to the hospital alive.
Police have not released the name of the suspect as of Sunday night.
"Senseless, absolutely senseless, there is no reason for that," Gretch said.
Neighbors say Lovette leaves behind a young daughter and was an employee at Timken Steel.
