PAINESVILLE, Ohio– It’s been 10 months since Richmond Heights Police Sgt. Michael Gerl was shot in the chest.
He is still off the job recovering.
“It’s been difficult, but getting better,” said Gerl, who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, broken ribs, and damage to his right lung and liver.
“Right after this happened the Police Wives of Ohio, which is an organization that helps fallen and injured officers, reached out to me and helped,” Gerl said. “I will never forget their kindness and I want to give back.”
Gerl, an avid sports fan, said the Cavs and Indians’ winning seasons gave him inspiration.
He thought he could design a T-shirt celebrating the two teams and sell it, with part of the proceeds going to Police Wives of Ohio.
His friend Ray Minger owns a printing shop in Painesville and was willing to help out.
“I thought it was a great idea,” Minger said.
The shirts are $19.95.
“I just want to be able to help those who helped me,” Gerl said.
