Indians Make Roster Moves

CLEVELAND– The Indians are winding down spring training.  This is their final week with the season opener early next week in Toronto.

The home opener is Monday, April 8 when the Yankees come to Progressive Field.

Veteran Jason Giambi saw his contract selected by the team, but he was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain. He will be eligible to be activated on April 9.

Yan Gomes and Cord Phelps were optioned to AAA.

Frank Herrmann was placed on the 60-day disabled list due to right elbow surgery. Veteran reliever Matt Capps was released by the team. The team may still try to resign him if he can’t find a spot with another team.

Nick Hagadone, Bryan Shaw and Ryan Raburn have been told barring injury they will make the team.

Scott Kazmir will be added to the roster prior to his first start on April 6, and Carlos Carrascio will spend the first 6 games of the season on the big league roster serving his August, 2011 suspension.
