MENTOR, OH – The nasty weather is causing more than just school closings; it’s also causing a lot of accidents.

“Business has been pretty brisk,” said Marty Roberts from Classic Accident Repair Center.

He said they’re seeing more and more cars each day, many with serious damage.

He thinks it’s because the roads are so icy. It’s making it harder for drivers to brake.

“Their tires have no resistance, so what they’re running into is almost at the speed they were traveling at,” he said.

As a result, the repairs are more expensive.

He said in the summer, the average is about $2,100. Now, it’s hovering around $3,900.

In most cases, the airbags are deploying, and that’s also adding to the price.

“The average airbag can cost up to 1,000 dollars to install and some cars have up to nine airbags in them,” said Roberts. “So that’s driving a lot of it. It’s great for safety, but it makes it very expensive for the repair.”

Right now, the shop is at full capacity. So to compensate, they’re working 12 hour days, six days a week.

As for advice, Roberts reminds drivers to slow down and buckle up.

“Understand that if you don’t wear your seatbelt in some cars, the airbags won’t deploy, so please wear them,” he said.
