CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. – Seven students and two adults have been taken to the hospital after an ice cream truck slammed into a Chesterfield County school bus head-on Tuesday afternoon.

Lt. Jason Elmore said the crash happened between around 2 p.m. at 1200 Charter Colony Parkway in Midlothian.

Chesterfield police said the driver of the ice cream truck was driving on Colony Parkway and as he approached a hill, suddenly saw traffic stopped.

In order to avoid rear-ending the cars, he pulled the wheel left and hit the bus head -on.

CBS 6 News’ Jon Burkett said the driver of the ice cream truck has been charged with reckless driving.

Bus number 527 was carrying 24 students from Midlothian High School.

The bus driver is listed in good condition at VCU Medical Center.

The seven students and the driver of the ice cream truck were taken to St. Francis Medical Center.

Officials said none of the kids were seriously injured, but suffered cuts and scrapes.

Chesterfield County Public Schools’ Shawn Smith said all of the parents of the students on the bus received a message from the school about the accident.

Those kids were also late getting home since they had to be taken home on a another bus.
