6 rescued from water in Huron, police begin recovery efforts for missing teen

HURON, Ohio -- Six people were rescued from Lake Erie Sunday afternoon. However, a recovery effort is now underway for a missing teen.

According to the Huron Chief of Police, officials were called to Nickel Plate Beach around 1:50 p.m.

A group of men were on a raft when people saw them struggling and assisted them.

However, an 18-year-old man went under water before making it to shore and never resurfaced.

A human chain was formed in the water in effort to rescue the teen.  Rescue boats were also deployed in the water and a helicopter searched from the air.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Ohio Department of Natural Resources and several area fire departments assisted in the rescue operation.

Around  5:45 p.m. the in water search was been suspended.

Police say it is now a recovery effort, as of 9 p.m. However, the Coast Guard is still searching the area by helicopter.
