BRIMFIELD, Ohio — The Fox 8 I-Team has learned that the Portage County Prosecutor’s Office is asking that a special prosecutor be named to look at the case of former Brimfield Police Chief David Oliver, and for the first time we are learning what the investigation is about.
The I-Team obtained a copy of an email from Portage County Prosecutor Victor Vigluicci sent to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office last week asking for the special prosecutor.
“Over the past few months, at the request of the Portage County Sheriff, the Ohio BCI Special Investigations Unit had been conducting an investigation of the former Chief of the Brimfield Township Police Department, David Oliver,” the letter states. “Oliver resigned his position on January 16, 2015, amidst allegations of misconduct with a female officer and some financial discrepancies. BCI Special Agent Arvin Clar conducted the investigation and gave me his final paperwork yesterday.”
Vigluicci said he had known the former chief and had employed his wife, Lisa, as an investigator with his office.
“Because of my prior relationship with Chief Oliver and my having employed his wife, I feel that a Special Prosecutor should be appointed to review the investigation and, if warranted, proceed with any prosecution,” the letter states.
The Special Prosecutions Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office did accept the Portage County Prosecutor’s request that it review the BCI investigation. Special Prosecutors Maggie Tomaro and Michael Cody will handle the case.
Oliver could not be reached to discuss the investigation.
Oliver became an Internet sensation with a large Facebook following while chief. He retired in January after a female officer filed a complaint against him alleging sexual harassment and said the former chief created a hostile work environment.
Oliver has previously denied the sexual harassment allegations to the Fox 8 I-Team.
