CLEVELAND - The Fox 8 I-Team has learned a 78-year-old landlord has been locked up in the Cleveland jail commonly known as 'the workhouse.'

James Mader has been sentenced to 45 days in jail. Court records show Mader was sent away in connection with housing code violations for at least two properties in Cleveland.

Mader’s wife says he needs a cane to walk and he had a heart attack doing a short stint in jail last year for these problems.
Pat Mader said, “But he went to court and said all the houses are sold. That’s what you wanted. But then when he heard 45 days in 'the workhouse,' he said ‘but the houses are sold.’”

Cleveland streets can be littered with dilapidated properties and slum landlords. So why lock up this guy?

Cleveland Housing Court not commenting. The Court says the matter is still considered pending.

The I-Team found the housing court wanted Mader to serve his time in one of his rundown properties. Court records show Mader was told not to sell this place but county land records show he did late last year.

A next door neighbor to one of the homes said he had complained about it to his councilman.

Mader’s wife said, “You see, our son used to do a lot of the work, but he passed away.”

Pat Mader added, her husband “admits he bought too many at once which he shouldn’t have done. But his houses were nothing like these other rundown houses, and they look like they’re ready to fall down.”
