CLEVELAND (WJW) – The FOX 8 I-Team has learned a 7-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after she was shot in the head at a home in Cleveland.

According to police, the incident happened in the 3300 block of East 128th Street Wednesday morning.

As of Wednesday afternoon, officers were still on-scene investigating and interviewing witnesses, Cleveland Police Department spokesperson Jennifer Ciaccia told FOX 8 News.

Investigators are looking into whether the girl was shot by another child “who came into contact with that weapon and fired it,” she said — but she stressed that element is still under investigation.

They’re also trying to determine whether the shot that struck her in the head was fired from outside or inside the home, she said.

The girl was taken to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in critical condition, and was still there as of Wednesday afternoon, Ciaccia said.

“What we’re really pushing with this case is gun safety. There’s really not an excuse for kids coming into contact with firearms unsupervised like that,” she said Wednesday afternoon.

“We just want to remind people that if you’re going to keep firearms in your home that you keep them stored properly. They should be locked in a safe; utilizing a gun lock or keeping them unloaded and keeping the ammunition in another place.”
