CLEVELAND-There is very little that will keep a hard-core Tribe fan away from the World Series, however sometimes major surgery will do just that

In late September, Gary Schultz's tongue began to hurt. He thought he just burned his tongue.
But over a period of several days the pain just became worse.

And when he finally went to the doctor they found tumors growing in the back of his throat, Gary had cancer.

"They gave us a choice," said Gary's wife Michelle. "They could take a piece of muscle from his forearm or from his thigh and rebuild his tongue and that's what we chose to do."

It took 17 hours of surgery to do the transplant. But for an Indians' fan, the timing couldn't have been worse.

It was game three of the American League division series against Boston

If you may remember, that game was rained out on Sunday, October 9 and had to be played that Monday the date of Gary's surgery.

"I woke up and asked for a pad and I wrote  down Tribe? And one of the nurses who saw the game told me that they won." Gary said

The thing that annoys Gary the most is that he's a season ticket holder with the Indians and he will miss all of the World Series even though he went ahead and bought tickets anyway.

But he'll watch the games with friends from the comfort of his couch..

And he's happy that he will be able to be around friends and watch the team play in the series.
and when the tribe wins the series it'll be something that he'll get to talk about now for many many years to come.

You can watch the World Series on FOX 8.
