CLEVELAND — Cleveland police are looking for the person responsible after a body was found following a house fire.

Firefighters responded to the blaze on E. 121st Street Friday afternoon.

While putting out the fire, firefighters found the body of a woman in the basement of the home. Police said the woman suffered trauma to the head. She was unresponsive and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Joyce Hood, who lives on the street, is concerned.

“We don’t know this person’s name, and for us, I don’t care the name. It’s still somebody has been murdered,” Hood said.

At the same time of the house fire, Lakethia Scott, a backyard neighbor, was alerted that someone set her garbage can on fire. Police have taken it as part of the investigation.

“They took my garbage can as evidence because the stuff that was in my garbage can was not mine. It was like clothing. I really couldn’t tell actually what it was because it was burnt. But I know it did not belong to me,” Scott said.

Neighbors said the home has been vacant for the past few months.

The fire is being called “suspicious” and homicide detectives are also investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit.
