LORAIN, Ohio — A dog found beaten, starving, blind and deaf in a bush in December has gained 35 pounds and captured the attention of animal lovers all over the world.

Herbie was rescued by Lorain Police Patrolman ‘Doc’ Rick Broz on December 1 on West 11th Street in Lorain.

“My first instinct was just to go ahead and put him down, but for some reason I just thought, no,” Broz said.

He took Herbie to the Lorain Animal Clinic.

Herbie stays at the clinic during the week, and on the weekend, Broz picks him up and brings him home.

“He can’t see, so obviously he isn’t going to be playing fetch or anything, but he doesn’t seem to be in any pain,” Broz said.

Herbie is not only blind, but also deaf and has a skull fracture from his previous abuse, Broz said.

He also has terminal cancer.

But Herbie is living out his final days as a dog should: with plenty of pets, love and doggy treats.

And the miracle dog’s Facebook page has more than 10,000 likes.

“From at least 30 different countries, almost every continent,” said Broz. “It’s just absolutely amazing.”

However, it’s not known who beat and starved him.

Police need someone to come forward and be willing to testify.

Broz knows that whoever abused Herbie would only face a misdemeanor charge because animal cruelty is not a felony in Ohio.

He hopes Herbie’s story will prompt change.

“Get it made into a felony in Ohio to abuse an animal,” Broz said.

He is urging people to write their state lawmakers and urge them to pass Nitro’s Law, which would make animals cruelty a felony in certain cases.

He said they have plenty of donations for Herbie and now ask that in lieu of donation for him, people donate to an animal welfare organization in Herbie’s name.
