CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Clinic on Sunday announced research linking heart disease and a compound found in red meat.
Carnitine, which can be taken as a supplement, is also included in some energy drinks.
The study led by Dr. Stanley Hazen of the Cleveland Clinic tested more than 2,500 people, including vegans, vegetarians and omnivores.
Researchers found once the carnitine landed in the intestines, the microbes that digest it produced a substance that speeds up the hardening of the arteries.
Vegans and vegetarians had a much lower risk.
