SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH – What started out as the heartbreaking story of a family who couldn’t keep their dog turned into a tail-wagging happy ending for the pup and a member of the Shaker Heights Police Department.

On Thursday, the department received a call from a family that, due to some sad circumstances, had to give up their dog. And even though the police usually do not handle calls such as these, Officer Laura Clague promised to help the family find the little guy a new home.

She popped him in her cruiser and brought him back to the station where, understandably, he was quite the little sensation.

While they were working on finding the pup a new home, Officer Matt Dunn came into the station. It just so happened that he and his family had been looking for a dog….and here was the perfect solution, waiting for him at work.

Here’s what the Shaker Heights police had to say about this happy ending:

Yes we get a lot of strange requests for help every day. It can be amazing to see how much more than fight crime and conduct traffic enforcement that we do. We realize that doing our job isn’t always going to make people happy, but we are happy to know people trust us. Thanks for trusting us to do the right thing.

Congrats to the new “puppy” dad and his family. We are told the pup has been named Harley.
