MONTGOMERY TOWNSHIP-A 78-year-old man is giving thanks for the heroic actions of Good Samaritans.

Tom Gregory, of Montgomery Township in Ashland County,  was replacing a repaired aerator in his pond Tuesday when he mistakenly put all of the weight on the same side of his boat.

Gregory says when he leaned to the same side of the boat it tipped over tossing him overboard.

Gregory tells FOX 8’s Dave Nethers, his knee high work boats were filled with water and he couldn’t get them off. Gregory  was struggling for about ten minutes to stay afloat in the water- roughly 7 to 10 feet deep, only able to use his arms.

His wife, who cannot swim, threw him a rope, but Gregory, who says he was getting exhausted trying to keep his head above water couldn’t turn around to grab it.

Gregory’s desperate wife flagged down some passing cars and four people, two women and two men stopped and pulled him to safety.

Gregory says he could only have held out for a few more minutes if help had not come.

Neighbors say he loves and meticulously cares for his pond and they couldn’t imagine anything bad happening to him in it.

Gregory is thankful for the help from complete strangers  He says it shows there are still very good people in the world.
