GLUCKSTADT, Miss. – A Mississippi mother found her 2-year-old daughter dead in the backseat of her car after she forgot to drop her off earlier in the day, according to authorities.

It was after the little girl’s mother showed up to the Little Footprint Learning Center Wednesday afternoon on her way home from work that she made the tragic discovery.

When day care workers told her that she had never dropped the child off that morning, “the mother immediately became distraught and ran out to her car and realized that the 2-year-old was still in the car,” Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker told WLBT.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff Tucker said the girl’s death appears to have been a horrible accident.

Charges, if any, are still pending as police investigate the child’s death.
