LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio -- Crews working to restore gas service in Lorain County were expected to complete the first of two necessary contacts at each individual home by 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Columbia Gas said an interruption from a pipeline to a distribution center caused the outage.

The issue left about 2,200 homes without heat as of 8 p.m. Monday, according to Ray Frank with Columbia Gas.

The homes were located in Eaton Township; areas west of Root Road, south of Chestnut Ridge, and Sugar Ridge in North Ridgeville; and the southeast corner of Elyria.

Residents are encouraged to run faucets at a trickle to prevent pipes from freezing.

According to the Lorain County Emergency Management & Homeland Security, in order to restore service, crews of two Columbia Gas employees will need to make two visits to each affected home. Crews will be entering homes with meters located inside the residence, and must enter all homes for the second visit.

Residents who leave their home should post a note with contact information for gas crews.

The crews that were not able to get into their assigned homes dug from the street to shut off the gas.

Soon the delivery lines will be purged, then the crews will return to each home to relight the pilot light and do safety checks.

As of now, there is no word on when service will be restored.

The Lorain Red Cross is being asked to provide shelter or any assistance for those in need. St. Mary's Hall at 320 Middle Avenue in Elyria is also open as a warming shelter for those affected.

Officials have also given out information on other warming centers in the area.

So far, residents have not been evacuated.

People with disabilities or facing serious issues are encouraged to call 1-800-344-4077.

Columbia Gas said the initial gas problem has been fixed.
