ELYRIA, Ohio– A couple homes in Elyria were evacuated Wednesday afternoon because of a gas leak.

The gas line was damaged at East Avenue and 4th Street, according to a Columbia Gas spokesman. The gas was shut off and repairs are being made.

Originally, the gas company said a few buildings nearby, including St. Mary School, were evacuated; however, that was later revised.

Columbia Gas said two homes were evacuated. A shelter in place was issued for a nearby apartment building and also for the school. St. Mary’s school day had already ended, so the shelter in place was for anyone staying for after-school activities.

Lorain County Emergency Management officials also responded to the scene.
