BEDFORD, Ohio– A retired Pepper Pike police officer has been arrested and charged with rape and stalking.

Bedford Police, assisted by the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the Aurora Police Department, arrested 55-year-old Jeffery Martin of Bainbridge. He has been charged with one count of rape along with one count of menacing by stalking.

Martin is a retired police officer from the Pepper Pike Police Department and also worked for the East Cleveland Police Department.  Pepper Pike police also helped with the investigation.

Fox 8 I TEAM reporter Peggy Gallek reports that court papers  allege that the retired officer stalked a woman by following her to Whole Foods in Woodmere and Ursuline College in November. The allegations state that he lied to security to get on campus.

Martin is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday. Martin’s attorney, David Snow, told FOX 8’s Kevin Freeman that when Snow went to visit Martin in jail this evening, Martin told his attorney that he is dumbfounded by the arrest.

Pepper Pike Police released this statement on Martin’s employment with them:

In 2014 an internal investigation was initiated for violations of the Pepper Pike Police Department’s Code of Conduct by Officer Jeff Martin. A disciplinary hearing was scheduled. Ptl. Martin resigned from the Pepper Pike Police Department and his employment with the Department ended prior to the date of the hearing.

“He handed out a business card while in uniform while trying to establish a relationship,” said Mike Cannon, Pepper Pike Chief of Police.

The Chief told the Iteam’s Lorrie Taylor Martin was accused by the woman of twice showing up at her door uninvited, once while in uniform.

According to Chief Cannon, Martin resigned before a disciplinary hearing could be held. The Chief said it was not the only disciplinary matter involving the former officer.
