OHIO (WJW) — We’re just a few short weeks away from crowning state champions in high school football.
Tonight, the playoffs continue with the regional semifinals.
There was a Division 1, Region 1 semifinal match-up at Tiger Stadium in Twinsburg, where Medina took on Mentor.
Medina beat Mentor by 14 points back in September. The Bees were looking to sweep, but Mentor had other plans.
In the first Mentor possession, the Cardinals marched right down the field. Scotty Fox went over the middle to Justin Hodge for a 3-yard touchdown catch. It was 7-0 Mentor.
On Mentor’s second possession, a big 3rd and 9, Fox hit Mitchell Waite down the sidelines, picked up the first down and pushed out at the second yard line.
Mentor scored two plays later to go up 14-0. They got revenge and upset Medina, 42-21.
Over in Euclid, the battle between St. Ed’s and St. Ignatius was in full force.
Cleveland Browns Coach Kevin Stefanski was also on the sidelines tonight and he saw a hard fought holy war.
St. Ed’s moved the ball, but they kept missing field goals. The Eagles missed three in the first half, but Marvin Bell carried the load tonight.
Bell picked up 16 yards on a carry that set up his short touchdown run. He finished with three touchdowns to put away the game and also put the Eagles back in the elite eight.
St. Ed’s won 28-7.
The Eagles and Coach Tom Lombardo saluted St. Ignatius Coach Chuck Kyle on his incredible 40-year career.
St. Ed’s will face off against Mentor next Friday night.
