ELYRIA, Ohio-- The heavy rains have caused flooding concerns for one local community.  The Black River has already crested to over 11 feet in Elyria and that has residents living along the banks focused on one thing, the water level, which keeps on rising.

The Black River is flowing in through and in some parts over Elyria.

"It's pretty high right now and we have steps behind our shed back there and they are probably under water," said Kathy Boris, who lives along the Black River banks.

Flood stage along the banks of the Black River is 9.5 feet.  As of Thursday afternoon, the water level was well over 11 feet.

"We're making sure to keep an eye on it throughout the day," said Steven Geiger of Elyria.

The usual spots in Elyria were already flooded by Thursday morning, including Ford Rd., which was closed due to high water. As for residents living along Greenview Drive and Woodside Drive, part of their roadway was covered by a foot of water.

The Black River flows behind several homes sitting along Pinewood Drive.

"There are times, believe it or not, when you can walk across that river," said Boris. "It's not running that high and that's normally during the summer."

But on Thursday, the water was up to about three feet.

"The other side of the river, that's all rocks and it's usually all by itself and the water is down; you can usually see the rocks," Boris said.

The river had already flooded some backyards.

"A lot of these houses have basements; but I think all we can do is keep an eye on it and hope," said Geiger. "I doubt very many people here have flood insurance."

For now, all eyes are on the sky and on the river, as residents wait to see how high the water will rise.

"I'm not too worried about it," Geiger said.

The river has crested over 11 feet. Moderate flood stage for the Black River is 14 feet and major flood stage is 18 feet.
